Quacks’ activities in estate agency practice unsettle ESVARBON
Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board of Nigeria (ESVARBON), the body responsible for the registration and regulation of the practice of estate surveying and valuation in the country, says it is uncomfortable with the activities of quacks in the estate agency practice.
The body adds that these pseudo practitioners have put the integrity of qualified and registered estate surveyors and valuers to question, vowing to reduce substantially the activities of these quacks in the country.
Ayodele Sangosanya, ESVABON chairman, who stated this at the induction ceremony for the newly registered estate surveyors and valuers in Lagos recently, disclosed further that “the board plans to check the spread of pseudo practice in the country by registering more qualified estate surveyors and valuers.”
About 107 registered estate surveyors and valuers were inducted, bring the total number of registered estate surveyors and valuers in the country to 3,119, which, the chairman said, was inadequate for a country of 160 million people.
According to him, the board is collaborating with relevant law enforcement agencies to prosecute culprits found guilty of the quackery, stressing that the board had instituted legal actions against quacks who refused to heed its advice.
He urged the inductees to imbibe the ethics and ethos of the estate surveying and valuation profession, adding that they should recognise integrity as the hallmark of success of any profession,
announcing to them that the board had approved the use of pseudonym for persons who desired to practice estate surveying and valuation with a name other than their family name.
“In this regard, the board has formulated and forwarded guidelines to guide the formation of mega-firms with pseudonyms to the Federal Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development for gazetting,” he said.
Also in his speech, Yinka Sonaike, the guest of honour, charged the inductees to embrace discipline, explaining that discipline was a key element of a successful professional, and added that they should build good reputation that required sacrifice, , among other virtues.
“Good reputation is very important in this profession; you must be of very high integrity. As professionals, you will face a lot of temptation. You must be resolute in your discipline,” he advised, and also asked the inductees to be contented with what they had, describing contentment as a key element to success for a good professional.
